Magical Fury

It started out as another boring day at work. Then a magical girl showed up, like something straight out of an anime. Except that I haven’t seen an anime where the magical girl threatens to kill people. She was throwing lightning bolts around and saying something about the reincarnation of Star Princess Astraia being in the building. It turns out that was me. So now I look like a scrawny teenage girl, and I have magical star powers, and a psychotic magical girl named Shadow Princess Umbra is making my life hell. She blew up my parents’ house. And the more of Astraia’s memories I uncover, the more I think that Umbra isn’t even close to being the worse of it. But I’m going to keep fighting, because giving up isn’t an option.

Magical Fury is a dark magical girl RPG, inspired by anime series like Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Your characters start out as normal girls who discover that they are reincarnated magical girls. They awaken to their powers under fire, and it will be up to you to decide where she goes with new her life from there.

The game uses a very simple variant of the Apocalypse World engine, aimed at fast and flavorful play that you can jump into on short notice or play in a more deliberate, long-term style. Battles come down to a handful of rolls, and throughout the emphasis is decidedly on the consequences of the course of action you choose.

The book also includes an appendix with 17 random tables to help you along with character creation and other things that pop up during play.

To play you will need some six-sided dice, character sheets, and something to write with.

Now also available as a 6"x9" 42-page paperback!

Since I cannot rate/review on Drivethru:
I've had a physical copy of this for probably 5 years. It is beat to hell, and I don't how it became that way. I only just started playing it, as the GM, and on top of it being the only pbta game I've every played, it's one of my top rpgs.

Bonjour, i just acquire magical girl and i have a question on the combat system. I have never played on this system, it seem really simple and fun to play but totaly different to what i play usually.
Honestly i don't really understand all of the combat system (Number of rounds, number of actions, threat action and dommage). If you can help me or just direct me to a place where someone can answer all of this Thank you!

Hi Coco B, I don't have this particular game though I do know something about PbtA games like this. I think you will have more luck with advice if you can be specific about what you don't understand. Perhaps you can ask the author a few questions at his website (https://yarukizerogames.com/); he might appreciate the chance to clarify anything that was confusing. There are also many forums out there for RPGs. This one looks like a PbtA game (Powered By The Apocalypse), so even if you can't find much information about Magical Fury, you might look into Apocalypse World or any of the many games that use the same system. Good luck!

Hey, quick question about one thing we didn't understand about the end of battles:

If there are only two players, then the second rating for determining the fight's outcome that is "X–2 Hits or Less (But 1+) Hits" would be "2–2 Hits or Less (But 1+) Hits." But 2-2 is zero. So does that mean that as long as they got at least 1 Hit in, it would count at that level, or would it be counted as zero hits? Then again, the third level for determining outcome is "X–1 Hits" which in the case of two players would also be 1 Hit. So I'm confused at the different levels, because in the case of 2 players it goes like this:

Zero Hits = 0
2–2 Hits or Less (But 1+) Hits = 0 (which is the same as Zero Hits, or is at least 1?)
2–1 Hits = 1 (which would be the same as "2-2 Hits or Less" if that is at least 1+)

Would you mind clarifying for me how the Hits system goes in the case of two players?

Late answer, but since I just bought this and read through it, my interpretation is is that the "X-2 (but 1+)" rule is 2 conditions that must both be satisfied. With 2 magical girls, they can't both be satisfied, so that result just never come up. So for 2 magical girls:

0 hits = Utterly defeated (0 hits result)
1 hit = Win at cost (X - 1 hits result)
2-3 hits = Sound victory
4+ hits = Kill or seriousy harm enemy

I hope that helps anyone that has this question in the future.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
