About the Author

One afternoon while strolling through a local bookstore,  Mark Bishop's daughter picked up the D&D Red Box set and asked, “Hey dad... what’s this?” That innocuous question triggered long-forgotten memories of Mark's younger days: rainy afternoons scarfing pizza while rolling funny-looking dice and delivering critical hits to treacherous gelatinous cubes. He soon taught his daughters and their friends how to play, eventually finding himself running RPGs at the local gaming stores and conventions. Dungeon Crawl Classics reminds him of the game he first fell in love with, and has inspired him to create an adventure which rekindles those feelings from so long ago. He lives in east-central Kentucky with his wife, two daughters and their two cats, Kirk and Spock.

I'm reading the adventure and have already printed the maps. Numbers on the map pages would have been nice.

Out of curiosity, how tough is it to balance a level 0 funnel for level 1 characters? I have put my group through two funnels and they now have a few level 1's. I have some modules for level 1 characters, but I'd still like to run through some of the other funnels. I suppose it'd be easy to balance combat encounters band maybe traps and tricks/events so long as they are not instant-kills like those frequently found in a funnel.

Long story short, would this be fun for a level 1 DCC party of say 3/4 characters with minimal tweaking?

Most funnels can easily accommodate a smaller number of first level characters with a few caveats. Exactly as you described, some encounters (especially early on in a funnel) are designed to thin the herd, essentially presenting the players with save or die situations for many characters at once. If you ever run into this, just convert the damage to a normal roll such as 1d4 or 1d6, and also perhaps limit the number of players effected. Also most funnels have replacement characters stocked toward the middle of the adventure in case things have gone really poorly for the party. Since this likely won’t be an option you’d want to use for first level characters, I would suggest keeping your eyes open for early encounters that might be too difficult, rather saving the major tough battles for the end. As long as you stay on your toes as judge, you should have a great time sending in first level characters into most funnels.

Your response is very helpful! I am new to DCC, having only ever run it twice (two different funnels) - so I had some idea how I could tweak a funnel but your response is greatly appreciated.

I got the book. Do I need the map pack with the 3 maps? I am confused what is that for and if I need it. Thanks!

By ‘map packs’ do you mean the 3rd party battlemaps created by the Middle Kingdom Trading Company? Those are fantastic works of art, and will look great if you use miniatures, but they are completely optional. The adventure comes with everything you need (including simpler battle maps) to run it.

What is the ideal number of 0-level characters that this adventure should run with? 10-15? 14-20? 20 or more?

DCC is not terribly interesting in precise balance, but the usual number would be 16-24 zeros to start, Since zero's lives are so dependent on dice rolls, things can swing wildly at times,so you might need to add or subtract a foe here or there along the way to maintain the recommended 'whittling down rate'. It all depends on your style and what you're trying to do as a judge, but having 8-10 characters surviving for the final battle is a good number to shoot for. You can find more adventure tips like this in the adventure appendix!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
