Cave Map Tiles

Design your own Dire Cave Bear Lair, or an underground troll horde with the Cave Map Tiles package of adventure map creation art assets! The Cave Map Tiles set of role-playing map tiles expands on the success of the original Dungeon Map Tiles with a new range of gritty underground cave tiles and new wilderness map tiles.

What is a Map Tile?

A map tile is an art asset that you can use to build up a virtual tabletop adventure map, building block by block. Each map tile depicts a 5ft square area of terrain. Such as the floor of a cave, an area of grass, or where the floor meets a wall. In order for a Game Master to build an adventure map for players to explore, map tiles are placed onto the digital canvas one by one until the desired structure is constructed. Be that terrain a wilderness area, a Castle, Dungeon, or cave system. Each map tile is a combination of hand-drawn artwork and photographic source material that gives Studio WyldFurr's map tiles a unique style. All of the tiles have been rendered from a bird's eye view of the landscape, with shadowing employed to give the illusion of depth.

Map Tile Scale

The Studio WyldFurr range of digital role-playing tokens and map tiles use a standard scale of one real world inch to three on-screen pixels. This gives us a standard map grid square of 180 pixels for each 5ft map grid square.

Raw Image Files Art Assets Edition

This edition of the Cave Map Tiles pack is designed for use by Game Masters who love building their own adventure maps and want access to a toolbox of ready-made artistic material rather than the hassle of designing their own material from scratch. The map tiles within this package were designed to act as a library of art assets that a Dungeon Master could simply just drag-n-drop onto a canvas to form a map.

The package contains a wealth of raw image files in JPG, PNG, and WEBP file formats. These image files form the building blocks which you can assemble into the form of a dungeon, fortress, monster lair, or whatever kind of adventure map structure you desire.

Start with a blank canvas inside the graphics editing program of your choice, for example, Photoshop, or Gimp. Then start composing the form of an adventure location by grabbing a map tile from the library, then plonk it onto the canvas right where you want it to go. Keep placing down map tiles and your adventure map will take form like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Using map tiles permits a very granular control over the form of your dungeon chambers and passageways, rather than relying on pre-constructed rooms which you cannot change. Once the structure of the map is in place, add the final touches by dressing your empty map rooms with furniture, props, and object tokens such as tables, chairs, statues, etc.

Expands on the Dungeon Map Tiles Set

This set of map tiles was designed from the beginning to expand on the range of map tiles found in our Dungeon Map Tiles set. You don't need the Dungeon Map Tiles set to use the Cave Map Tiles set, but we recommend getting both so you have a range of art assets for building caves and dungeon adventure maps!

We have included a range of interlinking tiles to link a cave system into a dungeon complex, plus the wilderness dirt tiles come with a range of tiles that link up with the wilderness grass tiles from the Dungeon Map Tiles set.

Question! Can I buy this to develop maps for products for publication? Do I have rights for commercial use of the works I produce with these tiles? I'm not talking about just re-packaging and re-selling the tiles. I mean, I might want to use these to make maps for a module or location pack I might publish.

PUBLISHER
The map tiles are for the personal and private use of the buyer, this includes the maps made with the map tiles.

Since we have had a number of people asking this question, we are considering producing a future map tiles set specifically for publishers for the creation of derivative commercial products. But the current map tiles sets, are not meant for such a purpose.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
