Men & Monsters of Ethiopia: An RPG Sourcebook for 5th Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Ethiopia is one of the oldest, strangest, and most fascinating places in the world and its history, peoples, legends, and folklore can serve as rich sources of inspiration for encounters, whole adventures, or even entire campaigns. Contents of this book are extrapolated from such sources; from references in classical mythology and other external sources to events in Ethiopia; and from firsthand research by the author during a research trip that included visits to sites around the country, from the ancient cities of Axum and Lalibela to numerous museums and the Institute for Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University.

This detailed 5th Edition book includes:

* 17 new types of monster presented in 29 stat blocks

* Roles of 20 types of existing monster in an Ethiopian setting

* Roles of 11 types of Nonplayer Character in an Ethiopian setting and stat blocks for five new types of NPC

* Brief sections on Religion and Animals

* Encounter tables that include the monsters presented in this book

~ TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG) ~

Be sure to check out Skirmisher Publishing's popular and Platinum-bestselling TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG)! This rules-light storytelling game can easily be played anywhere, from the airport waiting area you are stuck in, to the overnight in some hotel where there is nothing to do (and also, of course, in your own home). All the basic rules fit on one page; no dice are needed; characters have just two stats; and any bookkeeping that might be required can be done on a cocktail napkin with a pen borrowed from a waiter. TSRPG is fully supported with sourcebooks that include "Arms, Armor & More," "Wands, Wagons, Whips & More," and "OS-TSRPG," along with 10 compelling scenarios, "A Long Way to the Top," "Beating Around the Bush," "A Midsummer Night's Scheme," "On the Plane of Magma," "A Violet Shade of Death," "A Rose for Erato," "Into the Terrorium," "Whiskey in the Jar," "Krampusnacht: Night of the Krampus!," and "Temple of the Banished Suns," all of which include pregenerated characters and the basic rules for the game, allowing them to function as quick-starts for it. We have also had TSRPG translated into a number of other languages, including German (along with three adventures, „Eine Rose für Erato,“ „Auf der Ebene des Magmas,“ and „Tempel der Verbannten Sonnen,“ along with the „OS-TSRPG" supplement), Spanish (along with four adventures, "Una Rosa Para Erato," "Un Tono Violeta de Muerte," ""¡El Plan de Una Noche de Verano"," and "En el Plano de Magma" and the "Armas, Armaduras y Más" and "Varitas, Vagones, Látigos y Más!" supplements), and Ukrainian

Men & Monsters of Ethiopia: An RPG Sourcebook for 5th Edition

by Michael O. Varhola

Men and monsters of Ethiopia is a somewhat different sourcebook for a system like 5th D&D. This book gets players and GMs out of the western Europe setting that most players are used to and takes them to a more desert and dry environment that most Players are not familiar with, and to very good effect.

The book is just full of new monsters and NPCs for this new setting. The NPCs are very well done and are my favorite part of the book A competent GM should be able to come up with many types of encounters with these NPCs and should have a large range of reactions ranging from information gathering, to dire combat.

The monsters range from the mildly irritating, to extremely deadly. The ARWEAN DRAGON was my favorite of the bunch, and I am really looking forward to putting this Dragon in my game.

The monsters listings have a detailed description. I...See more

I can say that the file displays perfectly well in Preview!

As for Content - There is some terrific stuff here! Evocative entries for people of the region! Creatures like the Caracal, or the Debbi - which can be thinking encounters rather than fighting encounters - always useful. And the Cetus - the notion of the mythical whale of ancient times, as opposed to the actual one, makes you thiink of the phrase - "Her Be Monsters!" that you see on old maps!

The Arwean dragon is a nice take ! I love the notion of an earth dragon with stony plate armor, and Amanda Kahl's art is very good at conveying a different type of dragon from the standard colors of D&D!

I have seen, and enjoyed, Amanda Kahl's work for years, and I know she has done some card-stock miniatures for gaming. I would love to see a set of these for Men and Monsters of Ethiopia!

Is there anything in the works along this line?

In Acrobat Reader DC, all links appear with boxes around them. This makes the table of contents hard to read (thank you for providing links within the document, however). On the title page, you could consider underlining links and/or using a blue font, as these are often visual cues for links.

Is there any way to optimize this PDF to get the file size smaller without compromising quality? 190+ MB is awfully large for 53 pages. You may want to note the page count in the product information as well. That's a piece of information I often look for.

Sérgio, that is actually in the works! Other system versions of this book will include ones for 1st Edition/AD&D published under the Labyrinth Lord License and for our best-selling Cards & Quests RPG (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/148279). Because 5th Edition is the system currently most in demand, however, we decided we needed to lead with it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
