Tunnels & Trolls Rules 5th Editon

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Due to the renewed interest in OSRpgs we are issuing the classic 5th edition of Tunnels & Trolls as a downloadable PDF, so if you didn’t get a copy back in the “good old days” now you can get it!

Tunnels & Trolls is the 2nd oldest role-playing game and has been in print since 1976. This 100 page PDF contains the classic and widely popular 5th edition of T&T. This is the version that most people remember and used from 1979 to 2006. Like most rpgs, you play this with a GM and a group of players.  Play is quick and streamlined and T&T has more emphasis on role-playing and less on charts and reference books. All the rules you need are in this book and there is even a small GM adventure in this book you can use. The other unique aspect of T&T is that it’s one of the few rpgs you can play solitaire. There are well over 50 solo adventures available, including 26 published by Flying Buffalo. (Many of them are on Drive-thru.) Download a copy of the classic version of T&T and find out why it has endured for so long.

I just printed this book, and the copyright was a bit confusing. It says I need writen permission to print, yet isn't the fact I paid for the pdf persion to print it? I have a medical condition, so can't read it in a screen.

For some reason 7th edition (Fiery Dragons) doesn't show up with any "tunnels & trolls" search results.

Empire of the petal Throne was the 2nd RPG. But
did not have near the sense of humor and whimsy that Tunnels and Trolls has.

It makes zero sense at all to not have a POD option. Insane,

Thank God I have the original paperback Corgi edition of 5th edition (bought back in the 80s). I can understand the need to move with the times, but to alter the original spell names for no other reason than to adhere to current acceptable norms is unforgivable. A simple note on this page would have been more than enough. It's a good thing some of us have an original paperback copy. At least the original authors had a sense of humour that seems to be missing from modern society.

I just chanced upon an original 5th ed. copy and I snatched it up! (The 5th ed. is the copy I had growing up). I always loved the K.I.S.S., make-it-fun principals it embraced. Easy to bend, and hard to break.

I decided to go looking for articles that might mention the very out-of-date spell name used in the older editions of T&T. I found your review (for the first time - its now 2020) and I just wanted to add that we have changed that spell name in all the PDFs of T&T that we are selling. (Deluxe T&T which was published in 2015, did not use that spell name) The spell is now called "Obey Me!" so it more like what an angry wizard or mad scientist might say to someone who they are trying to hypnotize and now has no racial connection. T&T was written in 1975, the same year as Blazing Saddles. It was a different time and if we ever republish any of the older edition we will change the name in the printed version as well. We are sincerely sorry for anyone that was offended by that very badly named spell.

Very cool. Very clean and simple fix. You might want to put this note on all the "affected" versions in the description text.

Very cool. This is greatly appreciated. Between Flying Buffalo, DTRPG and eBay, I have spent around $200 on T&T stuff so far this year. Glad to support such a company.

The Deluxe doesn't seem to have any kind of mind control spell. Was this intentional?

They just updated the 5th edition rename the spell (you know the one). Excellent. Except they only did it partially and the old spell name is still in the index at the back of the book. Just rename it there as well and who cares if it isn’t in alphabetical order. Please update again. Thank you!

I would assume they will do it, remember, this change took about 3 weeks. I know they are working on 4th, but 1st and 5th have been changed (at least in the spell lists, so far). Great job, FBI!

I've been thinking on the spell name in question for some time. It was changed Deluxe, of course.

My first copy of the 5th ed rules was a Corgi, as that was what was in my box set that I bought in 1992. And, the spell names were tweaked a bit, and this was one that was changed. It isn't included, by either name, in the quick start rules included in the Corgi version of the solos.

I really didn't think of the spell name, really, until some of the changes made to Deluxe. Since then, it has been on my mind, in a low level way. At times, it bubbles up. In many ways, it's one of the reasons I have leaned away from recommending 5th, or any of the older eds, really, for play.

One little change. One small change. But, it's one that feels like a sliver being pulled out.

Looks like they took it out, without adding an index entry for the correct version. Also looks like there are two versions of the file, and I can't tell any difference between the two except that one is 5 MB smaller than the other.

Absolutely LOVE this game, it's my go-to for fast setup, low-prep fantasy. Any chance of renaming the racist spell name from the Level 2 spellbook? I know it may be easier said than done, but I think it's worth it for 5th and all previous editions. It's impossible to explain that spell to people I introduce this game to. It's 2020, my friends, and slavery isn't funny. Remember, I say this out of a legitimate love for the game that also called sex-based stat/height/weight differences "chauvinist". You were ahead of the curve there, it's time to change this as well. Thank you.

UPDATE: FBI has updated the PDFs of older editions of T&T, to remove the offensive spell name. It's been renamed. This is great! Thank you, Flying Buffalo, Inc.!

Are there any plans to release the 5.5 edition or the extra parts from that edition to go with the 5th edition?

Mine got flushed in a windows 'update' (the real versions fell apart eons ago). I dont think it was a complete download anyway when I got it, there were some pages only partially scanned, some entirely blank. Any chance I can get a replacement? I already paid for it many times over as it is. I know it's not your fault that windows decided to clear out my 'questionable' files in my downloads folder, but it's more about intellectual property, isn't it? I paid for it, got an incomplete 'book', and now dont have it any more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
