Notice About License to Use Maps in Streaming Video –

This topic of discussion has come up recently about whether customers who purchase any of my maps have license to use them for streaming online-play podcasts and videos.  In short: Yes, customers who purchase any of my maps via the Paths to Adventure publisher imprint may use them for online-play videos and broadcasts without requirement for additional license. As long as the map was originally purchased by at least one participant in the game being broadcast, my maps are being used as intended (as a prop during TTRPG game-play), and my maps are not packaged for resale or re-distribution outside of broadcasting for that intended use. This applies to monetized streams as well.

I believe this falls under fair use anyway. However, since that perspective has been publically debated recently, I wanted to clarify, as the copyright holder, what is allowed. Credit to “Justin Andrew Mason” and a link to the parent product sales page in the broadcast/video notes or credits would be greatly appreciated, but is not required. Also, if you use my maps and would like for me to share your show on social media, be sure to drop a note with a link and schedule for your show below in the comments. Enjoy the maps, and have fun gaming!

This applies to any map both created by Justin Andrew Mason and sold via the Paths ot Adventure publisher imprint. This does not apply to commissioned maps created by Justin Andrew Mason that are not also offered as a product or part of a product via the Paths to Adventure publisher imprint or are exclusively published by another publisher or publisher imprint.

At some point I would like to use the map I bought on roll20 for a story I am creating. I won't be streaming as my wife listens in and she already thinks I'm crazy. If I modify my voice and get too carried away I'll get sent to the nut house. Fun is not an option in my house unless she is making me miserable. I hope the pack works. The party won't be in a fureal home for very long and I intend to use the map as such.

Sorry about the wait on response. Unfortunately, I don't get notices when someone leaves a comment in the discussions on a product here. I check periodically, but that can some times leave a couple weeks between followup unfortunately.

This product does not include a commercial license with purchase. The maps included can be used by customers for streaming games online, but they cannot be used in as an element of a another printed or digital product. I do offer a commercial license for $300 which includes all the maps in Volume 1 of the Big Book of Maps as well as any of the "#FreeMapFriday" maps I release every week. If you are interested in that feel free to shoot me an e-mail at info@webdotstudio.com

Thank you very much for the response. I have never published before and I have no ideas about whether the dungeons I want to write will be good or useless.

It would be great if you had a page in your book explaining the licence issue as this would have reduced the time line for getting an answer, that or a blurb on this page in the description or even a section in the free preview.

I believe that they wont be terrible and for many years my players have loved them but I am in no doubt that they also wont be best sellers either.

To that end I dont have the disposable income of $300 to perform such an experiement.

I love the maps you have done, they truly are great and if I ever wanted for maps I would definitely come back and re buy this book but for now I will have requested a refund.

My friends, by my initial purchase of the Kickstarter for the BBoM #1 which has now progressed enough for my friends to see this wonderful collection of Fantasy Maps -with- VTT maps included, =and= another almost identical set for Low Resolution, this is proving to be one of my best investments in a product! I'm feeling kinda blue that I did not get the Kickstarter for the BBoM #2 - the Sci-Fi set. I'll be recommending this book and the other to anyone who wants to hear about it! Thanks for a job even better done now than it was originally!

Any possibility of getting an editable/layered, non flattened version of the gm maps for these? I'd like to change some of the furniture and features around but having to use the blank VTT maps and recreate every item on the map from the tokens pack is a mountain of work that i will honestly never do. A gimp xcf? A photoshop psd?

Probably not anytime soon for a lot of reasons, but including:

* The PSD files are incredibly massive in file size (averaging 1.8 GB each), which puts the entire collection somewhere around a half a TB. That's a hosting nightmare.

* The PSD files include *a lot* of my custom textures, which are not for public consumption. It's countless hours of work creating them and honestly central to my signature map styles. The only way I'd publicly release the layered PSD files would be after going in and flattening all the textures to various shapes and feathers, which would probably take 100's hours to do for all my maps.

Over the past few years, I've had two other requests (yours is the third) for this, so the demand has been incredibly limited. One potential solution I came up with was creating a merged transparent layer of all the map icon elements for every map. Then this would essentially be an overlay of those elements that could be placed as a layer on the player/VTT maps...See more

Hi Justin, Are you going to be doing a similar bundle for the Sci-Fi range of maps? I can see in your website that you were going to release them to the public from Apr 2019 but I can only see individual maps on here.

I am! It will be available as soon as I wrap up the Volume 2 project. It fell behind schedule in 2019 due to unexpected personal/health issues I was dealing with. With those issues now mitigated,I've been working this year to get it wrapped up and released so I can gear things up for rolling out Volume 3. It's hard to provide an exact timeline (I've tried a few times, but have changed that approach to just confirming that I am currently working towards completion). I am investing about half of my work week hours entirely to creating content to be released for Volume 2 (the other half going towards publisher projects, which put food on the table).

Hopefully I can have a SciFi bundle for maps available here on DTRPG in the next few months.

I'm working on re-establishing it manually. The way I set up the bundle discount (using a code) was causing some issues with DTRPG, so it had to be temporarily pulled. I'll be updating the bundle price tonight to match the original discount so it can continue. Sorry for the inconvenience! It's just taking me a bit longer to get it back up since I'll have to edit each "item" in the bundle individually (About 250 items in this instance) rather than just generating a code who the whole thing at once.

At the "Deal of the Day" price of $6, I suppose I'll eventually get my money's worth, but I mostly feel like I just bought an advertisement for the publisher's work in proper form (each map being available for purchase at "poster quality" for $2 a pop). While I won't go so far as to say these are useless for VTT purposes (some maps hold up a bit better under zoom than others), I would warn others who may be considering this product to temper expectations for VTT utility. On the other hand, if you just want pretty maps to print off at letter-size resolution for standard tabletop play, I guess this is a pretty good deal.

I tried to be as up-front and direct as possible in the product description that this is not a collection of 230 VTT maps. The market is about equally split between VTT players and traditional tabletop players. the book as always been intended as a tool for the later. The high-resolution VTT maps are a product targeted towards the former. While the individual maps are available at $2/map (intended for those who just want to get one or two specific maps rather than hundreds, there has always been an all inclusive bundle that provides them at a nearly 50% discount. In addition to that, throughout this entire discount on the PDF (and continuing in the weeks ahead in support of those transitioning to VTT under stay-at-home orders), there is a special discount for the VTT bundle including all 230 high-resolution VTT maps, the PDF book, and over 600 VTT icons. You can literally get them all for $48. That is roughly 16-cents per map.

I am sorry if you were not happy with the PDF product, but it was always...See more

To be honest I've been using them on Roll20 just fine using this book. Blown up they're less resolution than the individual ones, sure, but they sure look great and are to my mind the best collection of such maps around. Don't play on actual tabletop so can't speak to that.

Wow, this thing is awesome. There are literally hundreds of maps. Each map has a blank and a numbered version. So you have control over what the PCs see.
None of these maps are garbage either. Each has some use, the best thing is that you get an index that shows all the maps in thumbnail form. This means you can really pick through and find the ones you need.

Hi, Andy! Thanks for the rate/review! I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoy the maps! I'm currently working on wrapping up Volume 2 (Sci Fi), and it will be released this fall (2019).

The third volume is also already underway, it will be "Mini-dungeons" (2 per page instead of 1 map), for those who don't need massive dungeons to run! Volume 3 will be released sometime early-to-mid 2020.

I am pondering a 4th Volume once that's done, which would probably be another Kickstarter. It's a ways out so I'm not 100% sure what the theme will be, but it's unlikely to be Modern maps -- the market demand just isn't large enough to support producing a massive book dedicated to it. I may do some "modern" interment (much smaller) products though!

I'm thinking potentially going the opposite direction of Volume 3 (Mini-Dungeons), and making Volume 4 (Mega-Dungeons) filled with maps that are full spread (across two pages) and maybe even multi-level (spanning 2 or...See more

Im going to guess you have changed your business model and no longer want to sell huge pdfs with lots of cool maps but rather lots of VTT images and such. I know, things have been crazy last few years.

I liked the idea of a story spinning into some unexpected direction and being able to open a huge pdf and glance through the thumbnails quickly before finding exactly the set piece map for the final scene with awesome visuals but without really having to preplan. Its like an endless untouched vat of Awesome sitting in place overhead so your always ready to splash it on your players like its Flashdance. I really hope you complete the collection some time and let me aquire this long elusive blue covered questbeast.

Hey there!

I have to say that I am impressed by the variety and quantity of maps you have available. I understand that I need to purchase the VTT version of the maps in order to print out poster sized maps. I do not have the ability to print out the maps in my home. I assume that I would have to go to a local print shop to make that happen? Any advice or tips for communicating with a local printer in order to get a nice print of the maps?

thanks,

Thanks! I'm glad you like the maps. Honestly, creating the print book was more a project of passion than anything else. I love maps, and have several other books each filled to the brim with them. I just wanted to create one myself. While the print book serves little practical use beyond inspiration and a hefty (5 pounds) print collection of maps for cartography fans and bibliophiles, the real "meat" of the project is the high-resolution poster-print quality VTT map sets, all 230 of which are also available here on DTRPG.

Run a game with theater of the mind. This is a great resource for the DM to look at for describing rooms and environments and they don't have to design the maps themselves. It's a resource, like any other, and an amazing one by the look of it. I can think of a dozen ways I'd use this. It's not a book of battlemats, though, so be clear on that right away. It's for theater of the mind play.

These are amazing! I know I must have seen your work before just from the huge body of work you have done in the past but I'm sorry to say I didn't put two and two together before now. I won't make that mistake again!

I don't do VTT so are these maps of sufficient resolution to print tiles for my table top?

Also, I want to do some 1930's pulp action (both hard-boiled detective and vintage supers). Do you have anything like the streets Captain America was running down barefoot chasing the nazi saboteur in the movie? (i.e: city streets of "Manhattan", warehouse district, city hall or such)

(Ooo! Maybe it would fit into your Perils Of... series!)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them. :)

On poster-print maps: The PDF of the book isn't high enough resolution to print to poster size. However, every single map in the book is offered here on DTRPG individually as a VTT Map Set for $2. I've also created several bundle deals that discounts included map sets by roughly 25%. In the VTT Map Sets, the super-high resolution graphics for the maps are included and these print out crisp-and-clean at the 1-inch grid scale for miniatures (33" x 44" poster size). If you click on any of the VTT Map Sets there is a video demonstrating the quality of one of the maps printed out at this size. Also (for about another two weeks), the entire collection of digital resources for Volume 1 (230 maps + map 620+ icons and extras) are available as a $30 add on for my ongoing Kickstarter for Volume 2. Cool, thanks!

Just so you know, the kind of maps I'm thinking of would have a certain "feel" of the pre-war era, street lights, mailboxes, news stands, hot dog stands, etc.
Kinda like if you were to do a Victorian street scene, you'd have Victorian acoutrements.
But, yeah, I'll keep watching!
What are you planning after sci-fi?

What's coming up after "Volume 2: Science Fiction" is highly dependent on how quickly I can turn the project around. Volume 1 was finished and distributed months ahead of schedule for backers... in fact, it would still be ahead of schedule if it remained unreleased at all this month. I kept that pace despite a break in progress due to a death in the family.

I'm hoping that I can do the same or better with the second volume. It's looking possible that Volume 3 will be a "Fantasy Mini-Dungeons" theme; if it gets unlocked as a stretch goal in the current kickstarter (I wanted to provide some incentive for non-SciFi gamer to back the project); if unlocked a whole extra book is the reward. So, maybe Volume 4 can focus on the 20th century.

When I do release a "Modern" collection, I will most likely break it up into decades 1900's - 1990's (since I think most of the present day and near future map needs will be covered in the Science Fiction series). When I get...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
