Terra Arisen: Uranium Fever

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Mining is a time-honored practice, its roots going back to the Stone Age. When humanity reached space, it began mining the asteroid bodies and extraterrestrial planets in pursuit of metal and ice. The most desired and profitable of these minerals are rare earths and radioactives. With asteroid mining, the Belter was born – a profession, and then a culture, of space miners. The company miner, working for corporation or government, works long shifts on interplanetary rocks for a steady salary and employment benefits. The independent belter, on the other hand, strikes out into the belt, prospecting, and mining with his own ship. Usually, he scrapes by on base metals and the more abundant rare earths. However, what sustains the belter through hard work and the loneliness of space is the lust for hitting a "motherlode" – good radioactive ore worth a fortune. As the 20th century song goes, this Uranium Fever infects the miner's heart and propels them into the unknown.

This product explores the theme of interstellar mining. Its default setting is These Stars Are Ours! – Stellagama Publishing's space-opera setting. However, almost all material in this book will work perfectly well in any science fiction setting using the Cepheus Engine rules or any similar 2d6 OGL ruleset. The book begins with a discussion of belt mining in Terran space in the 23rd century, and then provides detailed rules for generating belter characters, generating asteroid belt characteristics in the Cepheus Engine, and mining asteroid belts. It also includes three belter spacecraft, and a collection of equipment serving in the interstellar mining industry.

So, fire up your fission reactor, calibrate your mining laser, and follow the calling of Uranium Fever to distant stars!

I just purchased UF and my very first character is rather spectacular. But his muster out roles have me baffled. He served 6 terms as a company belter and was promoted to Executive Officer. In muster he received 3 Coblynau-class subsidized miner results. I don't see rules to deal with this. One share means he is a partner in the miner, but it doesn't indicate what percent. With 3 partnerships, he could have 3 ships as part of the partnership or perhaps owns a greater percentage of the ship. If I choose a relationship with a bank or other investor, does this mean he gets more than the 50% share detailed on page 15? Or do I take the shares and reduce the age of the ship? It doesn't look like there is an option to pay the ship off over time, but perhaps that is what the partnership means? I am playing solo and am looking forward to fleshing out the crew...now to be 9 rather than the 3 I had been planning on. As the GM, I know I can adjudicate things, but am looking for your guidance, if any.

Further evaluation of the TSAO manual leads me to believe that this should be treated like a Frigate, perhaps? Multiple roles of a "frigate" result are used to reduce the AGE of the ship by 10 years or upgrade the ship (not to exceed 1mcr each). In the ship shares entry, it says that "ship shares" can be credited as 2mcr towards a ship. Is that the proper entry? Those shares reduce the remaining years to pay on the ship, not the AGE. Also, why does a ship share give 2mcr towards a ship but a ship share of a Frigate only provide 1mcr towards an upgrade? Does this mean that a Frigate share is only worth 1mcr towards reducing the AGE of the ship? A younger ship will just be more expensive to acquire.

Thanks again for any insights.

This is as in Cepheus Light.
Roll 1 = a 40-year old ship
Roll 2 = a 30-year old ship (same ship but younger)
Roll 3 = a 20-year old ship (same ship)
Younger ship means fewer quirks.

Is this significantly different than BeltStrike?

Parts of Uranium Fever do fill similar roles to that of parts of Beltstrike (i.e. mining rules and belter careers) but their substance is different as they were created from scratch. Other than that, there are major differences.

It's me again. I got stuck with the rules. I have located a asteroid so large, that the number of claims is special. Wow now I could sell it to a corporation. Therefore I should know how much value is in the asteroid. But how to determine this value if I haven't a number of claims I could identify? So I couldn't mine it for myself nor could I sell it. Have I missed something?

Special results are up to Referee discretion. Could be anything from alien relics to a "rock hermit" to derelicts. This is a chance for adventuring. If it is particularly large that the number of claims itself is special - this might be a planetoid with something on it - a small colony? pirate base? aliens? Again, up to the Referee's discretion. This is the meaning of "Special" results.

Thanks for your response. It's clear what a special find is when I'm surveying a claim. I didn't understand, that this is ment for size "special" as well. Maybe you can write that more clear.
It's bad for me, because I wanted to mine that belt but now adventure is coming ;) (But that rule makes uranium fever much more awesome!)

Hi, Uranium Fever is really great! If you will answer my questions I will write a review.
1. I can mine Biochemicals. But they are not listed at the speculative trading table of the Core Rules. Where do I find the values of speculative trading Biochemicals?
2. At "Detailing The Mining Area" there are "System Features": "The Primary Star is a White or Brown Dwarf". Wow, such features are available for system generation? But I can't find it in the Core Rules. Where do I find that?

Thank you for your kind words.

1. Biochemicals are a typo; should be petrochemicals (which are apparently the CE term for complex carbohydrates).
2. Thanks for spotting this! It is a relic of our previous system generation rules which uses unpublished "scientifically accurate" (though abstracted) star generation. We should remove this reference in the next revision.

Thank you for catching the errata! We will correct it soon.

Thank you for your response.
I would like to have more complex system generation rules with different stars ;)

I will test it some more and then write a review to document my opinion.

Thanks! We are definitely considering more complete system-generation rules as an expansion for Cepheus Light.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
