Fast Magic

ADD TO WISHLIST >

For anyone wanting to use Cepheus Engine as a rules-set for a fantasy setting, Fast Magic offers a complete, improvisational magic system.

There are no spell lists in Fast Magic and this is done firstly to keep the rules flexible and easily adaptable to a referee’s setting, and secondly to mirror the rules-light approach of Cepheus Engine itself. A player character does not have to wait passively for an opportunity to use a spell on his spell list. Instead he can adapt his magic to each situation, playing a much more active role in the game.

We provide very firm, well explained guidelines that ensure both referee and player understand the mage’s capabilities and limitations. Fast magic is easy to learn and, during a game session, quick and easy to cast.

This book includes a description of four new Cepheus Engine skills: Magic, Alchemy, Calligraphy and Artifice. A new magic-using career, Mage, is also included and may be used as presented or as a template for the referee’s own magical careers

Can you give some recommendations about how much damage an attack spell should do? As I see it, a mage with the air domain could shoot lightning at someone at short range as a difficult spell, but if he succeeded, how much damage would you recommend that do to its target? In the book, there's an example:

Lighting Strike – This launches a powerful and damaging lightning bolt out into
a corridor of damage 2m wide and 20m long. Very Difficult (-4).

What would you recommend that that do to a person that gets hit with it? Also, could the mage miss? Does a successful roll to cast the spell mean that it automatically hits its target? Would it matter whether the target is wearing armor?

I left it unstated for referee decision; but I would think, on a general level, that Difficult is 3D6 (survivable, equal to an axe, spear or sword) and Very Difficult is 6D6 (probably fatal).

Paul, hi. I'd like to use this in a Cepheus Engine RPG which I am publishing. How can I get in contact with you? I'd like to share my work on this with you.

There was one that I had in mind, but I thought most people would ditch my setting in favour of their own, hence the toolkit-style supplements. One more is planned for later in the year (the end of the year?), which is a world-building book for Cepheus Engine and other 2D6 SF rules-sets, with sailing, trading, fortress, mass battle rules, settlement rules, etc.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
