Typos: Under "Actions" it should read "His result is 16" not 14. Also, under "Contests" it should read "If the contest is not resolved..." instead of revolved. I hope this helps. I really like what I've read so far and I'm eager to try this out with my kids!

I updated the PDF with some very minor grammatical errors. No need to re-download unless you just want to. Thanks for 600+ downloads!

I like nice simple systems like this one (and suggest that others check this one out), but have a question. Doesn't having overlapping stats, hook, occupation and and/or feat make a character nigh-invincible in combat? The sample character has Prowess 7, Hunter, and "Arrow To the Skull". So whenever he shoots his bow, it seems like he'd roll 2d10 + 14 versus a difficulty of typically 15, *and* pick the best of three dice since he can always apply "hunter" and "arrow to the skull". True, enemies might get a counter-action that could give them a higher defense, but the example action (dangling a foe over a cliff) is treated as an unopposed, difficulty 15 action. The villain in "The Truce" has Prowess 7 and an unrelated feat with no occupation, so it seems like combat would consist of Reginald headshotting him on turn one.

This is a good question - and I'm sorry I am just seeing it now. The good news is that this is still being fiddled with, and I went through various iterations of the rules along the way.

Here's how I might adjust it - lowering the starting attribute points from 14 to 10 and capping the maximum attribute to 5. This would still make a potent hero with a Prowess of 5, doubled with an occupation. Keep in mind that feats are a little more narrow - "arrow to the skull" won't work so well in diplomatic negotiations. (Or maybe it will!) 3D10 (dropping the lowest) + 14 is pretty dominant. +10 is a little less so.

But I like your suggestion that it's important that competent enemies have occupations, less they go down like flies. I will try to incorporate that into the Beasties & Bandits supplement. Either that or encourage their attributes to be higher to make for more compelling villains.

Good questions!

The rules describe damage taken during combat, but there is no hit point section in character creation.

Thanks for the question!

Look under the Giving and Taking Damage section:

"All heroes can take damage equal to their Prowess before being Wounded. While wounded, a hero cannot make use of any feats. If a wounded hero takes an additional amount of damage equal to his Prowess, he becomes unconscious and must eventually be revived. Heroes get to choose when and where they die, so if such an epic event fits the story, the player gets to joyfully describe their hero going out in a blaze of glory."

You can easily add a more traditional hit points system. I'd say multiply your hero's Prowess by 3 if you want something more robust. I'm putting some of those ideas down in another one page PDF coming out next week. Look for it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
