Aegon's Conquest MegaGame

ADD TO WISHLIST >

It is the Age of Conquest, three centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. Westeros stands as a fractured continent, with seven warring kingdoms jostling each other for power and dominance. A new power has invaded from Old Valyria, bringing with them fire and blood. The time is now ripe to establish yourselves as the strongest Kingdom of the realm and unite Westeros under your banner. Claim victory in this continent-spanning war and forge the Iron Throne!

Aegon’s Conquest is a medieval fantasy themed tabletop megagame, meaning that it is an interactive experience where a large number of players work either together or against each other to affect the greater storyline. Aegon’s Conquest is a team-based competitive endeavor with tightly defined rules and player options. The game aligns its players into eight major factions of four players each with the ultimate goal to have the most points by the end. It encourages face-to-face diplomacy, tactical play, secret dealings, betrayal, and heartfelt roleplaying. The game is based on the history and deep lore as presented in the A Song of Ice & Fire literary series, though knowledge of the source material is not needed to play or run this game.

Each team in Aegon's Conquest represents one of eight lordly Houses of the fractious continent of Westeros, each portrayed by four major personalities: the Lord, the Heir, the Knight, and the Maester. The goal of the game is to claim the Iron Throne of Westeros by having the most Power at the end of the game. Power is gained by conquering neighboring lands, sieging enemy castles, uncovering ancient relics, and forging strong alliances. Power is lost when a House betrays another by revealing one of their secrets.

This document aims to provide all of the tools and guidelines necessary for a small group of ambitious people to run this megagame. The rules herein assume a do-it-yourself attitude. The document, thus, gives suggestions on how to make the materials and accessories needed to play the game on your own. Running Aegon’s Conquest is not for the novice game master and requires a vast amount of printing, accessory gathering, and setup. This document is created for the administrators and Game Masters running this game.

On their surface, the game mechanics of Aegon’s Conquest appear simple. Each player type has their options and available actions summarized on one side of standard size paper. However, the game reveals itself to be deeply complex and nuanced in the interactions between all players. Major actions of the players have rippling effects throughout their own faction, called a ‘House’, as well as their competitors. One pull of the thread or one bad misstep can have echoing repercussions. In this way, Aegon’s Conquest encourages a gaming experience where communication skills and social interactions are of utmost importance.

We had a game yesterday.
1. Does the Conquer partial result "7-9 : put a temprorary control marker" remove the owner's control marker ?
GMs said yes, but it led to strange situations where the region was controlled by noone the next turn, and fell under control of the first to play.
2. Secrets are very strong against a weak faction and don't matter much against a strong one (losing an army action, or a ressource. We lots 2 woods for a secret and lots 2 armies, and never got back from that having one or both losing their action the tuen after).

Many thanks for sharing this. I've only had a quick look but some interesting ideas so far. I particularly like your approach to giving guidance to players - it's a real issue at times so good to see different approaches. I'm involved with megagames in the UK - www.storylivinggames.com and www.penninemegagames.co.uk

Thank you for the kind words. Paul! We're always so thrilled to hear that people enjoy our work. We tried our best to fill in some gaps in the knowledge and guidance for people running megagames, writing the document for an audience that have never played or even heard of a megagame.

Megagames seem so much more popular across the pond than over here in the States. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get Aegon's Conquest to a British audience!

Dear Defy,

We are preparing for a game and I had some questions on the rules. I am wondering if there was a running FAQ somewhere or whether you could run som

The Heir

Hi! Sorry for the ...3 month wait on a reply. I must have missed the notice that someone replied here.

Heir: Yes, if they dress up. See page 7.

Maester: Does NOT start the game with a Link.
The Iron link can only be forged once the Maester has acquired the Copper, Electrum, and Red Gold inks in that order.
Links are forged in order, correct. The good ones are at the end ;)
Yes, the maester can start a new chain during any round.
Refer to the individual House Maester sheets for the full effects of each link. These additions are, well, in addition to the baseline benefits.

Night's Watch: The Lord Commander can give Secrets to GM's, but only GM's reveal secrets.
Yes, the Lord Commander is a member of the Night's Watch.
Yes correct, NW members can swap places.
No, the Steward and Lord Commander have their own set of actions and act independently from each other.
No, "forge a link in any order".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
