100 Merchants to Encounter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

For whatever reason, characters will often encounter merchants. They may need to offload some of their... acquisitions, buy some new needed items or get damaged things repaired. Some of the more specialised types of merchant also need equally specialised things to sell, or as components for what they are selling. Which is where adventurers can help, by hunting down this needed items. For a finder's fee. If the party is looking for a shop that the GM hasn't planned for, it can also be necessary to quickly create a new merchant.

100 Merchants to Encounter has 100 different merchants that characters can bump into, for whatever reason. They buy, sell, trade and repair many different types of merchandise, mostly legal but occasionally not. Most have fixed places of business but others travel and can be encountered on the road. They can be used as a source of adventure hooks, needed people to deal with or simply as random colour.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here is a sample result:

Burnada Scafly: The man who runs the simple shop Scafly’s Sundries, he claims there is nothing he won’t buy, sell, or trade. An aging wheeler dealer, with wispy hair and arthritis-swollen knuckles, there’s still a glint in Burnada’s steel-gray eyes that says his mind is as sharp as it ever was.

One thing that inhibits my enjoyment of your product is the 'layers' issue. I use a Linux OS and there hasn't been a version of Adobe Reader available for that OS since 2013.

The only way I can see around that is txt files. I've added them to a handful of products so far.

Respectfully, at txt file is a whole different thing. If the art is in a layer, why can't you just remove the layer and then republish it as the 'printer friendly' version? I realize my situation is atypical with regard to Adobe Reader, but I cannot imagine that other folks enjoy burning printer ink or toner to have a hard copy or that everyone just works from screens 100% of the time.

It's a possibility, though layers also mean that if you hide them, they don't print.

I guess the question is: Is there a version of the document that contains all of the text *before* the background and other images are applied? If so, that would be a 'printer-friendly' version of the product.

It's possible to do such, by simply turning layers off in InDesign before exporting the PDF. I admit that things like that I tend to do on specific products where people who own them have specifically requested something; old supplements, for instance, lack layers, but I've updated a few on request. The real thing is time. Though it doesn't take that long to do a single supplement like that, there are an awful lot of supplements and time quickly starts to add up, and in some cases, again with old supplements, it needs the supplement laying out again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
