A 5e Compatible adventure designed for 1st-level characters by Creighton Broadhurst

Far from the nearest town, hidden deep in the forest, lies a marshy, boggy valley. Woodsmen and hunters shun the place—kept away by rumours of a terrible beast lairing within and of a ghost haunting the valley’s boggy mere. But, as well as great danger, treasures magical and mundane may yet lie unclaimed in the valley for three unexplored tombs built by ancient hands, stand amid the mud and reeds. Dare you explore the Shunned Valley of the Three Tombs?

This collector's edition also contains extensive details of the town of Dulwich--a perfect base from which the PCs can launch their exploration

This product is a Dual Format PDF. The downloadable ZIP file contains two versions, one optimised for printing and use on a normal computer and one optimised for use on a mobile device such as an iPad.

A Note About Print Options

This is a black and white book, although the available print options only list colour editions. This is because the paper available for colour printing is thicker and of a higher quality than that used for black and white books. Better paper is more durable and takes scribbles and highlighting better than thin paper. Thus, to make the book more durable and useful, we went with the better paper.

The PDFs lock when I highlight any text, prompting a password. It appears any PDF from Raging Swan I've purchased on DriveThru RPG has this limitation.

Is this intentional? I wish to highlight text as I read, that seems odd to lock down the file for doing so.

How many sessions do you think this would take?
Given a standard session would be 3-4 hours long.

Is this adventure really designed for four 1st-level characters?

One of the encounters includes a party of four 3rd-level adventurers who try to attack the PCs preferebly when they are clearly injured. Another involves an owlbear. And the adventure even claims it is for beginning players and that "Experienced players may find the challenges herein too humdrum or easy for their tastes."

I've never run 5e before but I'm very skeptical about four newbies with 1st-level characters surviving any of this. I'm grateful for any clarifications! =)

Thanks for the questions, Andreas!

Regards the rival adventurers encounter, you are right in that the maths show it was a deadly encounter. It's been my experience with 5e that characters are pretty robust. I take your point about beginning players perhaps not having a decent amount of tactical awareness though. Perhaps to make it easier you might consider removing one of the rival adventurers.

With the owlbear encounter, again you are correct. This is a jolly tricky encounter designed to showcase how dangerous large creatures are. A wise GM gives lots of hints--scratches in the rock, eviscerating corpses scattered about and so on. Hints that dealing with the creature outside at range might also be in order!

Thanks for the quick reply! Since I have no experience running 5e I just wanted to make sure that I don't TPK my group in session 1 believing I'm running an easy beginner's adventure! ;-)

My pleasure! Remember to tailor things for your group. All beginners are not created equal! Total beginners are different to Pathfinder players (for example) trying 5e for the first time. Have fun!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
